It works for the DVD market why not the video game market... right?

This seems to becoming quite a common feature in video games recently and with the rampant press about escalating costs producing a single game I guess we can expect more of this from the successful franchises. Current examples include Ninja Gaiden recently rereleased earlier as a budget game now it has been remade as Ninja Gaiden Black at the same budget range featuring all the on-line content with the Hurricane packs and more besides. Devil May Cry Special Edition is on the way hopefully they will alter the repetitive nature of the later levels although I have my doubts!!

Then the serialisation of games is on the horizon in SIN Episodes distributed through STEAM the digital distribution system created by Valve for Half-Life 2 which in turn is experiencing its own episodic content with the continuation of HL2 in Aftermath released later this year (Supposedly April).

What's your opinion on this new business strategy for the video game market?

THe only Special Edition I would be interested woiuld be CD-i Games or a Box-Set of All the Legacy of Kain Games in the style of the Alien QUadrilogy Boxset, aka with a custom case for the complete set in the style of something Form the games. Never going to happen mind you but I would love to see it done.

As for the episodes and re-making of games Ninja Gaiden was a re-make anyway so the "Ninja Gaiden Black" with the online content was expected, as after all most consoles (in general) dont allow you access to resources in order to make your own content, thus the reason you have to mostly wait for the official expansion, thus the special editions being pushed out, whereas most PC based games the expansions, in the case of half-life for instance, are mostly continuations of the storyline along with new featres rather than just new multiplayer maps which there are thousands of becuase people have the access to the software and resources to make them themselves, after all you can download the editing tools for Half-Life 2 from Steam for nothing.

So in the console side of the market I can see the "Special Editions" and "Extended Bonus" discs taking off while I think it will be slower on the PC side of the market due to the huge community of Modders, Mappers Modellers and the Machinema makers.

Anyway enough af that rather long winded post of my thoughts and observations.
