As far as I know, the 550 is really just a 450 with DVC, at leas from the hardware point of view. In other words, you can indeed take out the cartridge if you want to (the cover might be sealed or something, I don't know about that).

Does a 500 even exist or did I make that up?

I have never heard of the 500 (nor the 400 or the 300).

The "portable" Philips players all start at N*100+50 with their numbering, their might be some kind of underlying model numbering system here. It doesn't go for the 6xx range, though: 650 and 660 are professional players, not portables.

That's correct. The CD-i 550 was just a relabeled CD-i 450 with a DVC, a different box and a gamepad instead of that ugly cabled remote control that was shipped with the CD-i 450. But some retailers also added a DVC to the CD-i 450 and sold it as a CD-i 550, so there's really no difference at all.

My cdi 490 doesn't have a cartridge you can plug out.... Inside is a single PCB which is just it. So it does exist...

Maybe that's because you have a CD-i 490?

perhaps you should read my initial question before making silly remarks ;)

cd- 450 with DVC

Post by rdjnl » Tue Aug 29, 2006 4:15 pm

The Philips cd-i 450 with DVC that I was talking about came in a cd-i 450 box on which they glued a paper stating that it contained the DVC. I always thought Philips did that, not the seller.

It came with a 450 manual and a seperate DVC manual.

I think it is possible to take the DVC out, but I never tried that. There was also some kind of 'spoon' supplied to take the DVC out.

It DID NOT include the gamepad however, just the 2-button controller. (Mine was broken within a year, the seller replaced it with the 3-button gamepad :!: )

those stickers were from Philips, probably to boost the interest in the system. Still it's a 450, and they did manufacture a 550 (that's actually on the player), but it's quite possible it's just a 450 with a seperate DVC installed.

How about the Magnavox players, those were all with an incorporated DVC as far as I remember.....
