and they say: "The 3DO library of games is not the worst of all time (that honor belongs to the Philips CD-i in my opinion), but it is not out of the bottom ten."

The games on the cd-i were a lot more original compared to 3DO (Burn cylce, 7th Guest, Lost Ride, Solar Crusade)
Also the arcade conversion like Dragon's liar and Mad Dog McCree look a lot better on cd-i.

Other consoles of the time like SegaCD/MegaCD, Amiga cd32 and Jaguar CD have a very bad collection of games (much worse compared to cdi, imho). Sega CD had a lot of FMV games with the worst possible video I've ever seen. CD32 mostly had amiga ports (a lot of them, not bad, but not very original) and JaguarCD had very very few games.

Later consoles like Nuon and Nokia N-gage also have a very bad game collection

Yep, cd-i is without doubt the best 'old skool' console that there is!

Hello all.

Thanks for the comments and for visiting my site. As you can see, it is still under development - much content is still to be uploaded/written, but the initial test was to determine layout and general navigational ease of use. Obviously, content is king in a reference site like VGCL (too bad the owner of that domain name wanted $1K USD for it).

The Site Map page is still being fleshed out when I have time after work (this is a hobby of mine and the others that contribute). In addition to the Kyocera player that you mentioned, is there any other additional models that should be listed? I thank you in advance for your input.

I have to agree with you that the worse game library does not belong to the CD-i - the consoles that have been listed do have a rather brutal library. I will append my review to indicate this, and give credit to this forum. I can not say that the CD-i library is in the top ten though - the quality of some games were better, but the overall software offerings, though diverse (I love my Peter Gabriel Secret World set) did not fully utilize the technology that CD-i systems afforded them.

I have read through posts from this community for quite a while, though have only just registered. I would respect any input given on this system, and would appreciate your feedback when I complete the review for this system.

Thanks in advance all.

Hello Terry ;)
It's nice to see an alternative of VGCL and it's even better CD-i is not forgotten. The community here goes with its ups and downs but as a long reader you'll notice the stories uncover an interesting history of Philips in general and CD-i specifically. If you want to have a good run of all CD-i players, you'd do best by visiting the ICDIA website, located here. It offers both professional and consumer models, both by Philips and other brands. The title list is also extensive and may be among the biggest lists of CD-i software.

CD-i was king in Digital Video, and its games were undeniably the best of all formats: Mad Dog, Thunder in Paradise, the 7th Guest, those games were just not possible on SNES and Mega Drive. Even Playstation wasn't capable of these resolutions. Of course, this is just a very small segments of the games market (in fact, it's lost in these days' 3d worlds) and fast paced action games were slow and bland on CD-i. Again, with a few exceptions, Pac-panic and The Apprentice come to mind.

Thanks Bas for the reply to my post, and I do apologize for my delay in responding back to you.

The link you provided (ICDIA) is an excellent resource - I will definitely include that site, along with this forum, in the Links section once I complete the CD-i review.

As a site admin yourself, I am sure that you can appreciate the amount of work it takes in the development/uploading of a website. As with any of my system reviews, I do take a good length of time with a said system and play a number of games on it from a variety of gaming genres prior to any writing. I also ensure to do the same with any console that would be considered the competition at the time. I appreciate the game suggestions - I do not have either of those but will pick them up.

I have only the 910 model, with appropriate DVC module. The 90's was a great time to enjoy new technology like the CD-i. I am old enough (sorry to admit it) to remember the infomercials on this system and thought it pretty cool at the time (though I opted to pay the $699 for the 3DO on the day it was launched - bad move). If anyone would like to contribute pictures of the other models, it would be appreciated. I am still writing the 'Contribute Pictures' script for my site, but please believe that you will receive full recognition for any contributions.

By the way, the absolute worst gaming library definitely belongs to the Memorex VIS system. I would have put this in there from the get-go but I knew most visitors would not be aware of this dog.

Thanks again all.

Hello all.

Kind of a necro-bump, but I wanted to let you know that I finally finished my CD-i review/page. I tried to be fair in my review in all regards (hardware/software). I did not attempt to provide every detail since sites like ICDIA and this forum already provide this information for those seeking additional data (links provided on my CD-i page). The link to the article:

Many thanks to everyone here and at ICDIA for their valued input. Comments and suggestions are always welcomed. Hopefully you will find that my CD-i page will aid in keeping its history alive for seasoned enthusiasts as well as those new to this technology.

Best regards,

Terry | Marriott_Guy

Thanks for the kind words Kev - they are appreciated. It is definitely a labor of love and hard work. I am not using scripts to build the pages, so each one is a custom adventure. This is partly due to ensuring flexibility in the presentation of content, but also a reflection of my limited web programming skills :)

Thanks again for the comments.
