A mystery?

oh it's a big mystery for sure. Actually, the topic title might be a little forehanded on the discussion i would like to get you all in. But for these stories the content is based only on recent history which i found out is very superficial to its nature.
A little deeper history starts with two very important happenings:
1972: Philips established PolyGram
1974: Philips acquisited Magnavox
I want you to develop the story by yourself, so no involvement, no talking. Now what do you think these occurrences effected the rise of the Philips CD-i?

The bold reason is a high interest which i can't deny is probably the biggest attraction to foreign retro gamers in sharing their interest in the philips console life. You shouldn't underestimate the point of view of visitors unknown to the system looking at it with a superficial view, only memorizing some interesting facts like the three Zelda titles which saw its life on CD-i and the lost Super Mario games which the Black Moon Project wathered your mouth with in 2003. Time flies when your having fun.

Well Polgram back then was just a music driven company and Magnavox is a hardware company based in the USA. I'm taking an eductaed guess here but wasn't the reason for the purchase of Magnavox a method to get a known name into the American market? After all not many knew Philips back then as it's known today.

Ofcourse in this context the buy-out of Magnavox is more important. In fact, this was some kind of omen for them entering other areas rather than just televisions ans radios. (Apart from a land set to USA)
Does anyone of you know some important, popular or pecular games on the Philips Odyssee?
For example, anyone heard of Wipe Out?

No way!! Did it actually have a game called WipeOut?
Do you know if that caused problems for Psygnosis? Or am I going off course here?

yes, it did. It's really remarkable!! It wouldn't surprise me if it did...

Getting back to the push and shove of the matter WipeOut was a Pong style game that used paddles wasn't it? Then this links back to Nintendo somehow?

Not really...
This background introduction is way off the connection with Nintendo, but it'll lead somewhere. I want to cover it on one of the next columns, this whole Nintendo issue. Perhaps that'll stir up some comments about it
Ofcourse I want to go somewhere with it, but as I started above, I'd like you all to be a part of it. Otherwise, just wait...

I would like to read this article Tom posted on Digital Press about the struggle between
Magnavox and Activision in the early ninetees. Really this resembles the struggle between Philips (Magnavox) and Nintendo
a lot...

Well, thanks for answering my question.
On another note, look here for my complete Magnavox Odyssey collection, incl. Wipeout... as for causing problems with Psygnosis, maybe the other way round would be more appropriate, as Odyssey Wipeout is from 1972.....

Nice collection!
Also another hint at the Philips Nintendo article your working on hey Bas. Well it's only a small skip and a jump now to assume Philips used its Patents to persuade the Nintendo License out of the very same company for Mario and Link/Zelda.
