CD-i 220 door problem

I have a cd-i 220. The door opens fine but when I place a disc in the tray and press close, I have to give it a little push after it closes part of the way. It reads discs fine. Just wondering if there is an easy fix for this. I don't think I am the only person with this issue.

do you hear it (buzzing..) trying to close the tray? Locate what's been stucking it: the cd itself (does it close without a cd), the tray itself, or the front panel...

If it does try to close it, perhaps some lubricant may solve it. If you remove the case you can see the cogwheel of the tray.

So this closing problem is more general than I thought. What happens here? Look at these pics where one side of the tray broke off, while it didn't want to close with it. Without this part it has no problem, but, like-wise, you can't put in a CD-i like this. What goes wrong here?

Now that's a fully solution to fix a not-closing tray. But if it really works without that part, the gear wheel on that side is most likely stuck. Provided that there is a gear wheel there, I don't have a 220 to check...

i thought the cd drives only have one gear wheel? And.... is the 210 inside not of the same architecture as the 220?

At least, there must be a guiding rail on the other side. That can be supported by a gear wheel, but that really depends on the tray construction.

I don't have a 210 anymore either. ;) Only a 370, 450 and 470 currently.

Door and tray problems CDI 210 and CDI 220

Most of the times the belt that drives the tray is worn.
Replace the belt with a new one, square belt 38.5 x 1.4 mm.
After replacing the belt door and tray problems are gone.

The belt for the CDI 210 and CDI 220 are the same.

Replacing can be done by removing the top cover.
Onhook the tray, on the left back side of the tray there is a clip that can be pussed away with a screwdriver.
The tray can then be removed out of the front.
There is now enough room so that the belt can easily be replaced.
Slide in the tray and the tray will hook itself by sliding in.

For the dutch people:

The belt can be purchased at www.elektronica-online.nl
Look for vierkante snaar 38.5 x 1.4 mm

i also had this door problem but the door closes now.
problem ist that the cd does not begin to spin .
i watched the prcess wihtout the cover.
may a change of the motor ( seems to be some kind of regular one)
solve this? or do you know something else...??

If the CD does not begin to spin, then most likely the laser is dead. Replacing the motor is just a waste of time, I never saw a dead motor in any CD drive. From all parts, they last longest.

hm ok, thank you very much for this advise which saved my time and money.
but then, the laser has to be linked somehow to the motor !?
just wonder because i thought if the laser would be damaged the cd would
spin though.
....
so it is probably the best to search for another player or is there any way that does not waste too much money unnecessarily to reactivate this unit?

What happens after closing the tray is that the laser first probes if there's a CD inserted at all (by checking if the beam is reflected). If not, then the motor will not spin up. So if the laser is completely dead - and not just misaligned -, the motor can never get the signal to spin up.

I think buying a new unit is cheaper than trying to repair. Those old laser units are quite expensive, if you find a replacement laser at all.

ok, thank you for this explanation, sounds very logical, i am the type of guy that prefers to understand things...
nevertheless i think i was not ripped off totaly though. 8 euros for this (damaged) unit with video cartridge, remote control and three cdi's....
i think its possible to get the money back at ebay for the working parts...
gonna think about it.....
again, thank you very much !

Calypso. Thanks man. Your solution helped me to fix my CD-i drive. The belt completely snapped.
