CD-i newcomer

Post by Tupin » Wed Jun 15, 2011 9:34 pm

I just bought a CD-i 450, and I need some information, mainly about DVC cartridges.

What games require the DVC to work? Is there a list?

hi there, new myself but I will try and help if I can. I guess the forum is kind of quiet lately so I don't know how long it will be before someone else shows up.

I found this site to be very helpful so I think it is a good place to start.

Welcome to you both into the world of cd-i!

Many cd-i games will require the DVC. All games like Dragon's Lair, Mad Dog McCree, Thunder in Paradise, Who Shot Johnny Rock, Secret Mission and the list goes on...

I would say that most games released during and after 1995 require the DVC. You can pick the cartridge up fairly easily on e-bay.

Please post again should you require any further info. The website you mention is Bas' website, and it is fantastic.

Actually, I don't think Secret Mission is a dvc game.

But yeah, many of the CD-i titles do make use of the dvc cart. Like Alan said, most (bu not all) of the consoles later titles require it. It is put to good use, and there are many games that betray their 16-bit roots and look awesome! :)

It was a very well supported add-on, something not to common in this industry.

I'd say its a must have for any CD-i owner!

Btw, I agree w/Alan that Bas has a fantastic site. Don't miss it!

it was finding that site that led me here. So question about games then, are most games available on other consoles like Sega CD, 3DO and such or are there any genuine exclusives that are worth checking out?

The CD-i has ports to be sure, but there a number of exclusives that I like.

My favorite is my avatar ... Secret Mission! :D Its from Microids who are better known for Amerzone & the Syberia games. If you like point n' click games, you'll surely like this. If not ... well, there are others.

The CD-i can run burned games, right? I'm still waiting for it to come in off of eBay...

They do, but some brands work better than others. If a burnt game doesn't work for you, you should try a different brand.

Some good news and some bad news. I finally got the CD-i in the mail today, and to my surprise it had a DVC installed in it! :P

Sadly, they sent the wrong power supply, I don't have one for the 450. I'm contacting the person that sold me it.

Good news about the DVC, not so much on the power supply. Hope you can get it resolved quickly.

Yes sorry to hear about the power supply.

But I have certainly seen sellers on e-bay selling just the power supply for cd-i 450 models. Have a good look on there and you may find one...

Just curious, has anyone made up their own out of a CAT5 connector and a PC power supply? Would that be possible? I'm just curious.

Does anyone have a pinout of either the plug or the jack?
