DAT Streamer Required to retrieve CD-i exclusives

Anything relating to CD-i can be discussed in this forum. From the multiple hardware iterations of the system to the sofware including games, reference, music and Video CDs. Maybe you hold an interest in Philips Media and the many development houses set up to cater for CD-i if so then this is the forum.

DAT Streamer Required to retrieve CD-i exclusives

Post by Bas » Fri Dec 02, 2005 12:23 pm

In order to retrieve some very exclusive material about CD-i, I would like to ask if anyone has a DAT streamer connected to their PC (I'm afraid running at Windows 3.11?) with the original EZ-SCSI software from Adaptec,

Otherwise, please help us how we can retrieve the info from old DAT tapes.

Please drop me an email, PM or post in this thread. Thanks!

I wonder if we can do this ourselves fairly cheaply? I have an old Windows 95 PC which could be downgraded to a Windows 3.11 PC at little expense. Then we'd need a SCSI card and the DAT Streamer itself which I guess would cost a little bit more. I'm no expert on these backup devices however!!

I'm not really sure if it has to be a Win 3.1 system, perhaps the software will run on higher OS systems as well. I don't know! I don't have any experience with DAT tapes!

SO what do you need to read? You can just do a raw transfer from dat with another OS? Are you looking for a 4mm dat reader? I may have one or have easy access to one.

'a raw transfer'... the DAT streamer need to work, i'm not sure if it is compatible with the newer OS, as DAT is pretty old! I thought you need the software as well, but I don't know everything!

I already found a DAT streamer, that's not the problem anymore, but it is not working on a normal (newer) PC.

does your PC have a SCSI connection? Doe you need a card to read it?

I have lots of stuff with a scsi connection, just only a 8mm dat drive. You should be able to read raw data from the dat drive in Linux; in windows it depends on the format of the dat tape (OS/9 backup?)

bas, you could try to add a partition to the harddisc of your current pc, and then install win 3.x or Dos or whatever on that partition...

Bas, are you sure it's a DAT tape, not EXABYTE? Both formats were used in those days...

If it's EXABYTE, I have a working type drive somewhere.

i'm sure it's a DAT tape... The thing is, the tape itself is not in my posession, but i'm helping someone else in favor of the content. Now, we have a streamer, we have the software... i'm waiting for the next deal.

I'm afraid the results will be shifted to next year, but we'll see...
