More CD-I Sprites

Anything relating to CD-i can be discussed in this forum. From the multiple hardware iterations of the system to the sofware including games, reference, music and Video CDs. Maybe you hold an interest in Philips Media and the many development houses set up to cater for CD-i if so then this is the forum.

Not a complete database by any means, but it took me a good amount of time to rip all these sprites using CD-I Emulator! I figured out a very good method of ripping sprites, which made this database possible.

tutorial

Thanks!

I know this was something Devin was interested in as well. This new method is a fairly simple process, though it's a bit complicated to explain. I'll do my best with some images for refrence.

The main problem with ripping sprites is that they sometimes are on very complex, colorful backgrounds. Because the computer can't tell the sprite apart from the background, there's usually no easy way of ripping the sprite out. Or is there? Here's a method that will actually help the computer determine what part of the image is the sprite, and what part of the image is the background.

For this method to work, you'll need two things: an image of the sprite, and an identical image where the sprite is gone from the location it was at in the first image.

1.
Take a screen capture of the sprite you want to rip from CD-I emulator window pressing ALT + Print Screen key on your keyboard while the emulator window has the focus (Print Screen is usually located near the keypad or Insert key) http://zeldapower.com/kao/tutorial/01.jpg

2.
Paste this image into Photoshop, or a similar editing tool that works with layers. http://zeldapower.com/kao/tutorial/02.jpg

3.
Return to the emulator and get the sprite you want to rip to move away from the location it was at previously. Its new location must not overlap its old location in any way. If you're trying to rip an enemy sprite, try killing the enemy, or luring it away from its position.

4.
Take another screen capture, now that the enemy has moved, and paste it into Photoshop into the same window as your previous screen capture, but as a new layer http://zeldapower.com/kao/tutorial/03.jpg

5.
Duplicate the layer that has the sprite in its original position, move it above the layer that has the sprite in its new position, and make this duplicated layer invisible http://zeldapower.com/kao/tutorial/04.jpg

6.
Now select the second layer, the layer with the sprite removed from its original position. Go up to the layer blending options to "Difference" http://zeldapower.com/kao/tutorial/05.jpg

7.
The view on screen should now change to reveal the background as being completely black, and only your sprite remaining, though the coloring will be very strange. http://zeldapower.com/kao/tutorial/06.jpg

8.
Merge the two visible layers, the layer with the sprite in its original position, and the layer with it no longer in that position

9.
Use the crop tool to crop the view so that only your sprite is visible. http://zeldapower.com/kao/tutorial/07.jpg

10.
Now use the color wand (magic wand selection tool in Photoshop) with the following settings: Tolerance: 1, Feather: No, Anti-Alias: No, Contiguous: No, Use All Layers: No.

11.
Click on the black area of your image with the magic wand and you will see that all the pitch black areas that represent the background have been selected! Press CTRL + I to invert this selection, in effect deselecting the background, and selecting only your desired sprite. http://zeldapower.com/kao/tutorial/08.jpg

12.
With your sprite still selected, go to the layer window and click on the invisible copy of your original layer, and make it visible again. You'll see that the sprite selection is maintained, but now it is going around the properly colored sprite. http://zeldapower.com/kao/tutorial/09.jpg

13.
With this selection made, highlight the properly colored sprite layer in the layer window then press CTRL + C to copy your sprite. Open a new window and paste your copied sprite into that window. Easy, right? Now just export this image as a GIF file with transparencies. http://zeldapower.com/kao/tutorial/10.jpg
