Anything relating to CD-i can be discussed in this forum. From the multiple hardware iterations of the system to the sofware including games, reference, music and Video CDs. Maybe you hold an interest in Philips Media and the many development houses set up to cater for CD-i if so then this is the forum.

CD-i system CD-R Compatibility list (lockout) ??

Post by enix2093 » Sun Oct 09, 2005 11:10 am

Just curious if anyone knows which versions of CD-i support play of CD-R games? I had a Magnavox CDI-450 w/DVC and it would boot them up but then once gameplay started it would crash and say "the disc may be dirty". It appears to be some kind of lockout or copy protection.

So far, the only versions I've heard play CD-Rs successfully are the CDI-220s

...any others?

The CD-i system had no protection or "lockout" as you call it whatsoever. The 450 simply has problems reading CDr media, you might have better luck with a high quality silver CDr media than what you've previously used. With the exception of the 400 and probably 500 series of CD-i players all others should accept CDr media, i've certainly never had a problem from the 210 right through to the DVE-200.

"The 450 simply has problems reading CDr media"

i had a 450 for years and it played cd-r's (sony, TDK and Maxwell) without any trouble... i guess it also depends on what brand of cd-r you're using.

I'm using Fujifilm CD-Rs...they're generally pretty high quality. I burned using BIN/CUE formats in Mode 2 using Nero at 4x speed (the lowest I can go). The same burns work just fine on someone else's 220 model.

The reason I ask is because it doesn't give ANY errors at all until gameplay starts, then it says the disc must be dirty.

I'm pretty sure it's not the laser dying either because it plays my originals perfectly.

Also I take it the dye colour is an important factor, silver media are the ones to go for!! I presume this is what you used Bas?

Holy crap....

Get this: I borrowed different types of CD-Rs from each of my friends who had a variety of brands and tried each. First I tried my FujiFilm again, same problem. Then I tried Imation, no dice, wouldn't play right. Next was Verbatim, wouldn't even boot. I started to notice that the better I went in quality, and higher in price I went, the crappier the performance. So, then just on a whim, I tried the worst bo-bo crap ass brand I had... "Pengo". You know the kind that doesn't even have the brand's name printed on the disc, and it's silver on top and bottom (hard to tell top from bottom)...yeah, that crappy. AND IT FREAKIN' WORKED PERFECT! WTH??!? That totally makes no sense.

Silver meaning the bottom color of the media...the part you record to.

In case you didn't know, the color is determined by the kind of organic material used inside the disc. Very rarely does it affect performance, but usually the darker the bottom, the less stable it is. I think the darkest is a really dark purple. (Playstation 1 media isn't done with a black organic material, it's just the tint of the plastic itself.)

well, we used to have a similar topic on the old board, and it turned out the better known brands showed more compatibility with cd-i players. However, you claiming the opposite! I'm sure it is about the brand, and even the color of the media (i thought there were no silver cd-r's?). We should make a list with all known brands and known workability.
